How a simple decision can make Huge difference in a UI Project amongst Your Team members.

The Journey to Better Product Design

So far this is week 3 of our always exciting journey to becoming industry-prepared Product Designers. And from our task for the week, we were instructed to design an analytic dashboard

Just to be specific, let me put it up as quoted by Side Hustle NG

Design an analytics dashboard for web or app analytics, a health monitor, or e-commerce analytics. Consider filters, chart types, and the core features/statistics the user would need most”

When we saw the topic, we were wowed.

This is going to be the first time some will be attempting a project as complex as a dashboard.

I can recall when I personally saw the project, two things crossed my mind, either I attempted this, or I wouldn't be a good UI designer.

We got the project topic on Sunday, almost midnight.

So when some other persons in the team woke up on Monday morning, we began to count day 1 from Monday.

Day One We began day 1 with brain-storming.

As a matter of urgency and creativity, we suggested everyone go to dribble and behance and get some inspiration from previous work done.

Preferably we had to also take a screenshot of some of the most outstanding designs we could find on any UI platform.

Stay close to this story, I'll tell you what we did as a team that we had never done before.

And most likely no team in the Side Hustle Cohort 5 did. Monday evening, precisely at 9pm GMT, we had our usual team brief.

Everyone submitted their design-inspiration we got from various UI platforms. Very beautiful I must say. Finally we picked a particular that we can either replicate or do something similar.

We thought this was the final decision, wait till the next day. You will be amazed what we did.

Day two

Tuesday morning we had a brief meeting as usual.

But we realize something.

Usually we divide ourselves into sub-teams to enable us to achieve more at a shorter time, and also allow everyone to deploy their expertise in their preferred area.

Other weeks we had few persons in the design team, we had the UX research team and also we had the design team responsible for the UI.

But on this day, we decided something amazing. This actually helped everyone to be very involved in the whole process of designing the dashboard

We decided that every member of the team will come up with their own designs.

WOW.

This was the most amazing decision of the team.

Even if you have not done a design before, make this your first attempt. This was the deal breaker.

So to make the process easy, Lawal created different design template and gave everyone their individual task with their template on the figma design screen.

So at this point, the challenge began. It was an avalanche of designs. This of course leads us to day 3.

Day Three

Wednesday was not much of a talking day. It was more of work.

But we realized some persons in the team had not started their designs. We assumed perhaps, they were still trying to find their feet, or they were still thinking about the kind of designs.

Just a thought.

But the design gurus like Lawal and Samuel were almost done already.

But we had a brief meeting on Wednesday evening, just to check up on everyone’s progress and see how they can be assisted by those persons who couldn’t find a few tools on the figma board. So, we move to day four

Day Four Thursday is here again.

But by this time, lawal was done. Samuel was done. Mofifoluwa was done as well.

This was really progress as far as we were concerned.

In previous weeks, we far from done at this point Also we could it progress because those who didn't believe they could work on a UI interface were already getting used to the fgma tools.

Kemi was almost done at this point as well.

This is indeed a good report for the team. We recorded some tremendous level of improvement, as well as team spirit and the exciting energy to finish strong. By the evening of Thursday, Kemi was done already. So were left with Prosper and Hodo

Day Five

Friday morning. The weather was already heavy and pouring. The rains came in the early hours of the morning.

Prosper started his designs today. Also Hodo started hers as well.

But guess what, by day six which is Saturday, they were both done. Another reason why we said the progress was tremendous. So lets move to day six

Day Six

The D-day is here finally. Every design is ready. In the words of Kay

“We really did good”

So we had our usual team brief Saturday evening, where we decided to pick from the various designs we have.

After much deliberation, we decided to merge 3 designs to produce the final outcome. This is what we call “masterpiece” in the words of Prosper Ejiyere

Kindly go through the lo-fi and Hi-FI of the various outcomes of our Dashboard designs.

We will appreciate comments and reviews as well.

NOTE: We did the LO-FI in 30 mins. I will love to call it record breaking.
